How to fall in love with your garden

Is your garden feeling a bit neglected and unloved? Does it need some long overdue pampering? Is it crying out for attention?

Much like those we love, gardens respond well to some pampering, a bit of wining and dining and generally being the centre of our attention.

Here are some tips below on how to show your garden some love and in the process, fall in love with your garden again.

Start with the design

A thoughtfully designed garden that takes into account all of your needs, considers how you will use your space and how much maintenance you are prepared to do. Somewhere to be social and entertain, somewhere to relax and recharge, somewhere for the kids to play, a pizza oven, a firepit – work out what your needs are and then look at the things you’d like to include. Having an idea of what you want from the start makes it easy to plan for these things. Having the garden of your dreams and a space that suits you and your family means your outdoor space can be an integral part of your lifestyle.

Plant a layered garden

A layered garden of trees, shrubs and ground covers that will give both depth and height. This will give more interest and also provides food and shelter for a multitude of birds, insects and other wildlife. A garden with life and movement is much more interesting and you will want to be there to see what’s new, what’s changed, what your wildlife is up to. It’s a real conversation starter too. You will get plenty of admiring glances being cast your way!

Plant flowers!

A mix of colourful flowers adds interest and a touch of romance and that’s what we’re all about, right? Go for cool tones of blues, mauves and whites, or add some zing with energising reds, oranges and pinks. Go old school and plant your Nana’s favourites – Dahlias and zinnias have been labelled as ‘Nana’ plants but they can hold their own in a Brisbane garden and their vibrant colours will fill your heart with joy! The birds, bees and other pollinators will thank you for it too.

Mulch immediately after weeding

Weed your garden and then follow immediately with either mulch or more plants, to hold off weeds.

This is one of my best tips and I swear by it!

Don’t give those pesky weeds a chance to take over! If your relationship with your garden is feeling like too much hard work, this tip alone should help you to get back on track.

Add fertiliser

Fertilise trees, shrubs and ground covers for a healthy and lush garden. Plants that are healthy will be more robust against pests and disease, meaning less chemical use and a more sustainable garden. Use a seaweed solution regularly as a plant tonic to keep plants looking their best.

Fragrance

Scented plants have long been associated with love and romance. They encourage you to stop and admire their beautiful perfume. There are lots to choose from but particular favourites are Madagascar Jasmine (Stephanotis floribunda), Gardenias (Gardenia jasminoides), Sweet Olive (Osmanthus fragrans), Roses of course and the Port Wine Magnolia (Michelia figo). Make sure to include these in a spot where you can enjoy their gorgeous perfume and indulge your senses.
